Certification Requirements
Fire Alarm Systems:
prerequisite is electrical training acceptable to the FPCB
1 year of documented experience with a) A recognized training program or;
b)successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems,
Generator Systems
Electrical training acceptable to the Fire Protection Certification Board OR Red Seal Diesel Mechanic/heavy duty mechanic/automotive mechanic or certified electrician (or other electrical training acceptable to the Board)
A recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 40 systems, 2 years experience
Water-Based Fire Protection Systems
Red Seal/ticketed Sprinkler fitter OR
A recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 40 systems and one year experience.
Fire Pumps
1 year documented experience with
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 40 systems
Special Fire Suppression Systems – Pre-Engineered (SP-P)1.
2 years documented experience with
Manufacturer Training AND
A recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems
Special Fire Suppression Systems – Custom (SP-C)
2 years documented experience with
Manufacturer Training AND
A recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems
Smoke Control Systems
prerequisite is full certification in Fire Alarm Systems; and
a recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems 1. 3 months documented experience with
Unit Emergency Lighting
prerequisite is electrical training acceptable to the FPCB
a recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 100 units, 3 months documented experience
Fire Extinguishers
a recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and
inspection and tests of a minimum 200 units and 3 months experience
Commercial Kitchen Exhaust System Cleaning
3 months documented experience with
a recognized training program or;
successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems
- Recognized Training Programs:

- In addition to taking Manufacturer’s Training, the technician is required to successfully achieve a passing mark on a Fire Protection challenge examination or complete the recognized training.
- Training Programs must have been completed within five (5) years of the date of application, and documentation submitted be relevant industry experience within that time period. If the training is more than 5 years prior, the applicant must either retake the course or write the challenge exam.
- *A passing grade of 70% is the minimum requirement for any recognized training.
- Academic Training that is acceptable to the ASTTBC Fire Protection Certification Board. Each applicant will be evaluated individually
