Certification Requirements

  •  Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems 1. 1 year of documented experience with a) A recognized training program or; b) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and c) inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems, AND 2. Electrical training acceptable to the Fire Protection Certification Board.
  • Generator Systems 1. 2 years of documented experience with A recognized training program or b) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and c) inspection and tests of a minimum 40 systems, AND 2. Red Seal Diesel Mechanic, heavy duty mechanic, automotive mechanic or certified electrician (or other electrical training acceptable to the Board)
  • Water-Based Fire Protection Systems 1. 1 year documented experience with a) Red Seal/ticketed Sprinkler fitter OR b) A recognized training program or; c) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and d) inspection and tests of a minimum 40 systems Fire Pumps 1. 1 year documented experience with a) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and b) inspection and tests of a minimum 40 systems
  • Special Fire Suppression Systems – Pre-Engineered (SP-P) 1. 2 years documented experience with a) Manufacturer Training AND b) A recognized training program or; c) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and d) inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems
  • Special Fire Suppression Systems – Custom (SP-C) 1. 2 years documented experience with a) Manufacturer Training AND b) A recognized training program or; c) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and d) inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems
  • Smoke Control Systems 1. 2 years of documented experience with a) prerequisite is full certification in Fire Alarm Systems; and b) a recognized training program or; c) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and d) inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems
  • Unit Emergency Lighting 1. 3 months documented experience with a) a recognized training program or; b) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and c) inspection and tests of a minimum 100 units, AND 2. Electrical training acceptable to the Fire Protection Certification Board.
  • Fire Extinguishers 1. 3 months documented experience with a) a recognized training program or; b) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and c) inspection and tests of a minimum 200 units
  • Commercial Kitchen Exhaust System Cleaning 1. 3 months documented experience with a) a recognized training program or; b) successfully achieve 80% on a challenge exam; and c) inspection and tests of a minimum 25 systems
  • Recognized Training Programs: Academic Training that is acceptable to the ASTTBC Fire Protection Certification Board is generally from CFAA and BCIT.  Each applicant will be evaluated individually so if you have training from another province please call for assistant.   *A passing grade of 70% is the minimum requirement for any recognized training**.
  • Training Programs must have been completed within five (5) years of the date of application, and documentation submitted be relevant industry experience within that time period. If the training is more than 5 years prior, the applicant must either retake the course or write the challenge exam. In addition to taking Manufacturer’s Training, the technician is required to successfully achieve a passing mark on a Fire Protection challenge examination or complete the recognized training.
