Generator Systems Testing Competency Guide

Competencies - Technician is able to:

Conduct inspection and testing in conformance with applicable codes
2
Conduct an inspection of emergency generator set main components
3
Conduct an inspection of emergency generator set field components
4
Conduct an emergency generator set startup and shutdown
5
Conduct a test of the transfer switch (when applicable)
6
Demonstrate the ability to use any special tools and gauges required for testing
7
Conduct a 2 hr full load test as required by applicable codes
8
Prepare clear and accurate inspection and test reports
9 Communicate clearly with the owner or authorized agent
10 Communicate clearly with the authority having jurisdiction

Performance factors - The technician is able to:

1
Understand and conduct all inspection and testing in conformance with the applicable code requirements.

Inspect the prime mover, generator and control panel to determine that it is in good operating condition and for items such as but not limited to, fuel supply, coolant or oil leeks, battery terminal and leads, and that oil, coolant and battery water levels are correct.

Inspect the transfer switch, battery charges and day fuel tank to determine that they are in good operating condition. Inspect to correct function of all auxiliary equipment such as, but not limited to, radiator shutter control, coolant pumps, fuel transfer pumps, oil coolers and engine room ventilation controls and UPS equipment.

Conduct a failure of normal AC power and ensure that the prime mover starts up and shuts down within the prescribed times.

Conduct the test so that the generator set operates under at least 30% of the rated load for 60 minutes, and that the automatic transfer switches are operated under load.

Operate any of the special tools and gauges required for testing.

Conduct an annual 2 hour full-load test. The test shall equal the name plate kW rating of the emergency generator set less the applicable derating factors for site conditions.

Prepare clear and accurate inspection and test reports and maintain records for the authority having jurisdiction.
9 Communicate any deficiencies with the owner or authorized agent and make recommendations for deficiencies that need to be rectified.
10 Communicate clearly with the authority having jurisdiction and advise him of any problems or unsafe conditions in the building.


Note: The above mentioned competencies are to be used as a guideline for the type of work the technician is required to do. For accurate testing references the appropriate code shall be consulted.
